Ceramic braces work very similarly to other fixed braces but differ in a crucial way – they are more discreet and comfortable for the patient. Like metal braces, ceramic braces make use of brackets and archwires to move the teeth into the new position, but because they are made of tooth-coloured ceramic and clear or tooth-coloured wires, they are much less noticeable. Some patients also find them more comfortable, as there is less friction, causing less irritation in the mouth.
The length of treatment time will depend on the position of the teeth at the start of the treatment, but treatment with ceramic braces can often take longer than with metal braces. In most cases, patients will wear their ceramic braces for 12+ months. As with other fixed braces, patients will have to use special brushes and adopt a new oral health routine to ensure food and debris are completely removed from the mouth and to keep decay at bay. You may also have to limit or change your diet to reduce the chance of breaking or damaging your braces.
