Crown lengthening is used to increase the tooth’s surface, thereby helping the gums appear less noticeable and pronounced and producing a more even, less ‘gummy’ looking smile. In some cases, we may also use this treatment in conjunction with another, such as a crown or composite bonding, to produce the desired effect.
There is no real cause for the appearance of a ‘gummy’ smile, except that in most cases, the teeth appear shorter or smaller than in other less ‘gummy’ looking smiles. By extending the tooth’s surface, more of it is on show when the patient smiles, and the smile looks less gummy.
This treatment requires a great deal of skill and mastery, and our North Down Implant and Orthodontic Clinic team is very skilled in performing it. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout and can provide a sedation treatment during this procedure if required.
